SAMHSA: Alcohol Abuse Awareness Billboard

Project type

Public Health Campaign / Billboard Design / Advertising

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
This billboard is a striking visual created for SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) to raise awareness about the mental health dangers associated with alcohol misuse, particularly its connection to depression, hopelessness, and suicide. Designed to capture attention and provoke emotional reflection, the billboard uses intense imagery and color symbolism to deliver a critical message, "Alcohol isn’t worth killing yourself over.” By pairing visual metaphor with direct, urgent language, the design aims to break through the noise of everyday advertising and offer a clear path to help.

DESIGN ELEMENTS & SYMBOLISM:
Illustration of Woman in a Bottle - At the center of the billboard is a powerful metaphor of an illustrated woman, trapped inside of a tipped glass bottle, her posture and expression conveying sadness, isolation, and despair. She represents those who feel imprisoned by their alcohol use or are suffering silently with mental health challenges leading them to misuse alcohol.

Pouring Motion & Blood-Red Liquid - The tipped bottle visually suggests alcohol consumption, but instead of a drink, a deep red liquid pours out, forming a blood like puddle. This visual metaphor links alcohol abuse to real emotional and physical danger, evoking the risks of self-harm and suicide.

Headline Message - Above the puddle, the bold statement reads, “Alcohol isn’t worth KILLING yourself over.” The word “KILLING” is emphasized in dripping blood red type, matching the liquid’s color and reinforcing the message’s severity.
The typography’s visceral style is designed to shock, but not sensationalize. It’s a visual call to take the issue seriously.

Call to Action - Below the main message is a clear, compassionate follow up that reads “Help is available” followed by SAMHSA’s hotline number in red for immediate visibility. The red color links it emotionally and visually to the central metaphor, making sure it’s not overlooked.

Branding & Information Placement - The SAMHSA logo is placed at the top of the bottle’s neck, symbolizing the organization offering support even when someone feels most trapped. The SAMHSA website sits under the body of the bottle, offering a digital route for support and resources.

Color Scheme - The purple background conveys a sense of seriousness, urgency, and care, aligning with SAMHSA’s branding and mental health themes. Red is used selectively for emotional impact symbolizing pain, urgency, and danger, but also drawing attention to the avenues for help.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
1. Individuals struggling with alcohol misuse, especially those experiencing depression or suicidal thoughts.
2. Loved ones and family members seeking to recognize warning signs.
3. General public, to increase awareness and reduce stigma.
4. Youth and young adults who may be vulnerable to both substance use and mental health challenges.

OUTCOME:
This billboard delivers a bold and unflinching message about the risks of alcohol abuse while providing an immediate lifeline through SAMHSA’s support services. The combination of metaphor, urgency, and direct access to help transform this design from a static billboard into a life saving moment on the side of the road.
