PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Global Graphics: Symbols is a visually driven exploration of the history and significance of graphic symbols across cultures and time. Designed as an engaging educational tool, this textbook combines a clean, modern layout with historical context, highlighting the global evolution of graphic design through iconic symbols. A key design element is a space theme, with Earth depicted in a transparent way to create a global perspective on how symbols connect humanity. This comprehensive design not only emphasizes the importance of symbols but also offers a visually immersive experience for students and graphic design enthusiasts alike. In addition to the primary textbook, alternate covers for Global Graphics: Colors have been created and maintain the same layout structure but focus on the role of color in graphic design. Both books share a visually cohesive design that ensures they feel like part of the same educational series.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
Cover Design for Global Graphics: Symbols - The cover features a captivating space background, with Earth in the top left corner. Earth is transparent to subtly indicate that the focus is on global symbols rather than the planet itself, keeping the attention on the theme of graphic design. The title Global Graphics is rendered in a clean white sans serif font, making it easy to read and modern in appearance. The word Symbols is prominently displayed in a striking golden orange/yellow color, contrasting against the darker space background and drawing immediate attention. The use of this color symbolizes both energy and importance while aligning with the idea of a "golden age" of design and creativity.
Below the title, transparent images of various iconic symbols are overlaid, giving a hint at the content within without overpowering the design. These symbols float subtly beneath the text, giving depth to the cover and reinforcing the book's theme. The author's name appears in the bottom right corner, subtle but present, adding a touch of professionalism to the design without distracting from the central visuals.

Half-Title and Title Pages - The half-title page introduces the textbook with Global Graphics in bold black text and Symbols in the golden orange/yellow color. The contrast of these two elements introduces the theme of the book and sets the tone for the design direction. In the title page, the title Global Graphics: Symbols is written in black, ensuring clarity and focus. The author's and publisher's names are also in black, maintaining consistency in the minimalist aesthetic. These pages set the foundation for the design and guide the reader's eye with simplicity and clarity.

Background Design - The half-title, title, and chapter pages all feature a subtle ombré effect, transitioning from pastel green to pastel blue. This gradient creates a soft and harmonious background that serves as a visual introduction to the book's content. On each of these pages, a white line drawing of Earth is subtly placed, symbolizing the global aspect of graphic design. This minimalistic representation adds a layer of depth without distracting from the primary content.

Table of Contents - Each chapter title is highlighted in a different color, representing various themes or sections in graphic design, while the sub chapters are displayed in black. This differentiation aids in navigation and gives the reader a sense of structure within the textbook. Page numbers are clearly indicated, ensuring the reader can easily reference chapters, topics, and sections. The color coded chapter titles tie into the overall theme of the book, giving the contents page a cohesive, polished look.

Introduction Spread - The left page features a blue and white map of the world, visually reinforcing the global theme of the textbook. This map is simple, using clean lines and soft color to prevent it from overshadowing the text. The right page features the introductory text in black on a white background, keeping the focus on the content. This stark contrast between the black text and the background allows the information to stand out clearly.

Chapter Opener and Subsequent Pages - The chapter opener on the left hand side features a large green strip that aligns with the first chapter's theme. The color coding strategy visually guides the reader through the book. The chapter title is displayed prominently on this page, in a clean sans serif font to maintain clarity. The following pages feature sub-chapters in black text, and each page will be paired with symbols relevant to the section. Each group of symbols will be displayed within a large circular picture, with the text wrapped around it. This design gives the symbols prominence and encourages the reader to interact with both the visual and textual elements of the book.
Some pages feature a large image of a particular symbol, accompanied by a drop down box with more detailed information about its meaning. Beneath the photograph, a paragraph of text will provide further context, creating a balanced layout that enhances the reader's understanding of the symbols historical significance.

OUTCOME:
The Global Graphics: Symbols textbook is both a visually dynamic and informative resource. The design principles enhance the educational experience by offering a structured yet engaging layout that draws on historical graphics and cultural symbolism. The thoughtful use of color, typography, and visual elements not only teach readers about graphic symbols but also demonstrate how design can be both functional and aesthetically captivating. The cohesive theme of space and global interconnectedness is carried throughout the design, creating a sense of continuity between chapters and sections. By introducing Global Graphics: Colors as a follow up, the series will maintain visual consistency while allowing the reader to explore another critical aspect of graphic design.
