PROJECT OVERVIEW:
La Montaigne is a family-oriented Italian food brand specializing in sauces, pasta, and olive oil. The brand celebrates the warmth, heritage, and joy of shared meals with a visual identity that blends tradition with playful, modern cues. This project involved the complete development of a visual identity system including logo variations, color palette, typography, packaging design, and brand presentation materials.
DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
Logo System & Typography - The core logo features a typographic composition that balances elegance and familiarity. The wordmark combines Snell Roundhand Regular for "La," evoking a personal, handwritten warmth, with Bodoni 72 Small Caps Book for "Montaigne," providing structure and classical sophistication. A splattered tomato replaces the "O" in "Montaigne" in the main logo, injecting a playful, organic element that ties to the brands culinary focus. To extend the logo system across product lines while maintaining cohesion, graphic substitutions were developed. For the pasta line, a fork twirled with spaghetti replaces the stem of the letter "E" in "Montaigne." For the olive oil line, a delicate olive branch forms the diagonal stroke of the letter "N." Each variant remains visually consistent through the use of the same fonts and layout structure, while the customized letters reflect the specific product category.
Color Palette & Brand Personality - The color system includes a Tomato Red, Muted Yellow, Muted Lime Green, and a Forest Green. These hues are carefully selected to communicate freshness, warmth, and approachability, aligning with the brand's core values of family, comfort, and culinary joy. The combination of muted and vibrant tones offers a balance between heritage and playfulness, ensuring appeal across generations.
Packaging Design - Each Product line features custom packaging with detailed hand drawn illustrations of key ingredients with clear product labeling and hierarchy, ensuring legibility and visual interest on shelves and a harmonized layout system that allows each product to have its own personality. With this, sauce jars showcase rich tomato and herb illustrations, pasta boxes incorporate window cutouts framed by illustrated wheat and pasta shapes, and olive oil bottles use elegant, vertical labels featuring illustrated olive branches and tasting notes.
