"In Memoriam" Exhibition Pamphlet - 9/11 Memorial & Museum
Project Type
Print Design
Date
February 2024
PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The "In Memoriam" exhibition at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum honors the lives lost during the tragic event of September 11, 2001. To support this deeply moving exhibition, I chose to design a commemorative pamphlet that guides visitors through the space while providing essential historical context and humanizing details about the victims for my Preparation of Art for Print class.
DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
Information Navigation - The foldout format of the pamphlet was designed to be both portable and intuitive, allowing visitors to unfold layers of information as they move through the exhibition. Each panel highlights key facts about the events on 9/11, offering context for the artifacts and multimedia displays within the exhibition.
Color as Emotional Language - A deliberate color palette of red, black, and grey was used to reflect the gravity and emotional weight of the subject matter. Black evokes solemnity and remembrance. Grey adds visual neutrality and calm, aiding readability while supporting the somber tone. Red is used to highlight key moments and symbolize the urgency, loss, and lasting impact of the attacks.
Human Centered Design - The pamphlet includes names, photographs, and personal stories to place emphasis on the lives lost. This approach personalizes the tragedy and honors the memory of victims beyond statistics or timelines.
OUTCOME:
The final foldout pamphlet serves as both an interpretive guide and a respectful memorial element. Through clear visual hierarchy, impactful use of color, and narrative structure, the design fosters a space for education and remembrance. It enhances the visitor experience by deepening their connection to the exhibit.
