Murder at the Library

Project type

Infographic Poster Design

Date

September 2023

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Murder at the Library is an infographic poster that visually represents the thematic connections between eight randomly chosen books from different sections of a library. The concept was based on the idea of finding hidden connections between seemingly unrelated works, each of which shares the common theme of violence. The artist employed a visual metaphor inspired by a police investigation, with a cork board, evidence bags, yarn connections, and key findings. The books are pinned to the board, each with evidence bags next to them containing symbols of violence found within their pages. Color coded yarn lines tie the books together, indicating shared thematic elements of violence, such as murder, brutality, and conflict. The keys provide crucial information on what each yarn color represents, as well as visual representations of items from the evidence bags that tie directly to the themes explored in the books. The sticky notes contain brief descriptions of each book, offering context and enhancing the narrative of this literary crime investigation.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
Police Cork Board as Central Visual Metaphor - The main visual element of the poster is a large cork board, evoking a sense of a detective's investigation into a murder case. The books are pinned to the board with thumbtacks, each accompanied by an evidence bag containing items symbolic of the violence depicted in the books. This setting immediately communicates the serious and investigative nature if the theme, while adding a touch of intrigue and drama to the design. The cork board will also create a grid like structure for organizing the books, with each book placed thoughtfully to show how they relate to each other.

Color-Coded Yarn Line Representing Themes - The books are connected by color coded yarn lines that symbolize their shared themes of violence. Each yarn color corresponds to a specific detail about the book such as location or the themes it focuses on like psychology or religion. The lines stretch from one book to another, forming a web that connects the books based on their thematic similarities. The yarn line are dynamic and visually striking, providing both clarity and energy to the design, guiding the viewer through the interconnectedness of these works.

Two Keys for Contextual Understanding - The first key breaks down the yarns color codes. This key is places to the right side of the cork board, but to the left of the other key. It functions as a visual guide to the yarn colors used. Each color corresponds to a specific thematic element. This key is crucial for understanding the connections between the books, providing a simple, clear reference for the viewer. The second key breaks down the meaning of the items in the evidence bag. This key displays images of the items found in the evidence bags and decodes their meanings. This key helps provide deeper insight into the books and their contents. These items act as a physical representation of the reader's experience while exploring the themes within the literature.

Sticky Notes with Book Descriptions - Each book on the cork board will be accompanied by a sticky note placed next to the book covers. These sticky notes provide brief descriptions of the book's content, highlighting how violence plays a role in the story. The notes are written in a concise, direct style, offering just enough context to explain the significance of the violence in each narrative without overwhelming the viewer. The sticky notes also add a personal touch, making the poster feel like a lived-in, active investigation.

Overall Layout and Typography - The typography has a "case file" aesthetic. It is clear and easy to read, but also has an element of grit to it, enhancing the detective and investigative feel of the design. The books are arranged in a slightly chaotic but organized manner, mimicking how a detective might lay out evidence. The color coded yarn lines weave throughout the poster, creating visual interest and movement. The keys are clearly separated from the central grid of book, ensuring that they are accessible but not overwhelming. The overall structure will maintain balance between chaos and order, effectively portraying the complexity of finding patterns in violent literature.

OUTCOME:
The Murder at the Library infographic poster will be a visually captivating and thought provoking exploration of violence in literature. Through the metaphor of a police investigation, the poster visually connects the books in a way that makes the viewer actively engage with the themes. The color coded yarn lines, evidence bags, and sticky notes create a narrative that guides the viewer through the web of connections between the books, allowing them to see how violence is expressed in different ways. The design will be visually striking, with a sense of tension and intrigue, capturing the attention of anyone who encounters it. Ultimately, the poster will serve as both an artistic exploration of literary violence and a playful, interactive design that brings the world of books to life.
