Digital Illustration Booklet/Information Design

Date

December 2023

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
This digital illustration booklet takes a humorous approach to the age-old challenge of winning over a cat's affections. The guide, titled "How to Get Your Cat to Like You," is crafted with the intention of not only giving clear, actionable information but also offering a good laugh. The booklet begins with a lighthearted illustration of a cat in a sink with the title prominently displayed. The following pages walk the reader through the basic steps of gaining a cat's favor, such as giving them treats, attention, pets, and playtime, all of which are met with an adorably angry cat response. A few pages of intense eye contact between the owner and the cat bring comedic tension, showing the unlikely battle for affection. Finally, the booklet culminates with an unexpected twist on the last page. The last page brings a cheerful dog, with the message "Get a Dog!" The bright yellow background, paired with the dog's happy face and a big heart, delivers the final punchline. This fun, yet informative guide is designed to entertain while subtly teaching the importance of patience and understanding when it comes to dealing with the grumpy, independent nature of cats.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
Cover Page- The cover page features an illustration of a cat in a sink, a scenario associated with cats' strange love for confined spaces. The cats posture communicates a mixture of disinterest and annoyance. The text "How to Get Your Cat to Like You" is prominently displayed in playful, bold lettering that sets the comedic tone. The color palette is dark and cold while still allowing the cat to stand out as the focus, and establishing the theme of relatable, everyday cat behavior.

Step-by-Step Instruction Pages - The subsequent pages break down common attempts to gain a cat's affection such as treats, pets, attention, and playtime each accompanied by illustrations of the cat looking unamused or outright angry. The first page depicts the cat's unimpressed face as it is offered treats. The cat happily eats the treat but does not forget to side eye the owner as if the cat is alert eating around the owner. The first page also shows an illustration of the cat's visual discomfort as the owner tries to pet the cat. On the second page, the owner is trying to show the cat affection, but the owner is met with a reluctant cat that looks like it doesn't want to be bothered. The second page also features the owner attempting to play with the cat but the cat decides to attack the owner instead.

Intense Eye Contact - The third and fourth pages showcase a close-up of the owner and the cat's eyes, each locked in an intense, yet comedic stare. The text reads "And when that doesn't work..." emphasizing the moment of tension between the two, almost as if both are in a standoff. The background is black symbolizing the growing frustration and humorous rivaly. The eyes are detailed, with the cat's eyes filled with mild distain and the owner's eyes reflecting determination. This adds a surreal, almost cinematic drama to the booklet.

Final Twist - The final page takes a sharp turn from the tension, using a bright yellow background to symbolize a lighthearted resolution. Here, a happy dog is depicted, holding a bone with its tongue out. The dog is next to a big heart with the words "Get A Dog!" displayed in a playful bold lettering. The dog's expression is one of complete joy, further amplifying the comedic twist. The bright color shift to yellow creates a sense of optimism and relief, offering a humorous resolution.

Illustration Style - The cats expressions are exaggerated in a cartoonish style to add humor to the cat's reactions. The cat's eyes and body language are intentionally over the top to emphasize its discontent. The background for the step-by-step instructions uses contrasting colors compared to the last page. The dramatic use of color emphasizes the change in mood from frustration to humor. Overall, the tone is light and playful, as well as whimsical, with bright, exaggerated colors and bold lines. The cartoonish style allows for greater exaggeration in expressions, making each page comical and relatable.

OUTCOME:
The finished digitally illustrated booklet is engaging, comedic, and visually appealing as a way to approach the classic "How to win your cat's affection" dilemma. It provides humor in a situation that cat owners often find themselves in trying to befriend a creature that's known for being aloof and independent. The clear, easy to follow steps, paired with colorful and exaggerated illustrations, will entertain while delivering a tongue-in-cheek message. The unexpected and humorous twist at the end offers a laugh out loud moment that cat and dog lovers can truly appreciate.
