PROJECT OVERVIEW:
The Tokens single art for the song "Shadow" is a deeply introspective and surreal representation of the themes of loneliness and paranoia explored in the track. The design reflects the protagonist's psychological journey, creating an unsettling visual narrative that complements the song's emotional and atmospheric qualities. A disembodied staircase looms in the void of darkness, representing a sense of isolation and the daunting climb towards emotional escape. The staircase leads to a cigarette symbolizing the protagonist’s act of escapism surrounded by surrealist imagery that embodies their inner turmoil. The art is designed to evoke a visceral reaction from the viewer, mimicking the discomfort and isolation the protagonist feels in the song. The design continues onto the vinyl packaging, creating a cohesive and immersive experience that resonates with the song's mood and lyrical content.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
Surrealist Dreamlike Composition -
1. The disembodied staircase represents the protagonist’s journey through their feelings of loneliness, suspended in a void of noise and darkness. This conveys the sense of aimlessness and isolation, capturing the surreal, fragmented reality the protagonist experiences.
2. The absence of a solid ground beneath the staircase further emphasizes the emotional instability and uncertainty felt by the character.

Visual Representation of Escapism -
1. At the top of the staircase, a cigarette is positioned as though it’s being drawn from the void, almost looking like cigarette smoke. This represents the protagonist’s desperate attempt to escape their internal chaos, capturing the theme of escapism as they seek solace in fleeting, destructive habits.
2. The cigarette also acts as a symbol of fleeting relief, suggesting that while the escape may offer temporary comfort, it is ultimately just as hollow as the void the protagonist is in.

Paranoia & Duality of Self -
1. Two silhouettes are placed on the staircase: one right-side-up and the other upside-down, creating a disorienting effect. The upside-down silhouette, mirroring the upright one, follows it closely, symbolizing the protagonist’s paranoia and the constant feeling of being watched or followed.
2. This visual cue highlights the fractured state of the protagonist’s mind, where they are unable to trust their perception, constantly feeling the weight of surveillance and fear.

Handwritten Thoughts & Song Lyrics -
1. The staircase steps are filled with handwritten words, mimicking the protagonist’s scattered, fragmented thoughts.
2. These words and song lyrics bleed into each other, almost appearing as if they are trapped within the boundaries of each step, reflecting the internal struggle of the character’s mind.
3. The compactness of the words on each step creates a sense of claustrophobia, further reinforcing the feeling of being trapped within one's own thoughts.

Noisy Background for Emotional Discomfort -
1. The background is filled with static and distortion, adding a layer of discomfort that reflects the protagonist’s sense of paranoia. The noise represents mental chaos and unrest, allowing the viewer to physically experience the dissonance and unease the protagonist feels.
