Scaled in Blue

Project type

Mixed Media Diptych - Collage & Painting

Date

January 2022

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Scaled in Blue is a paired artwork consisting of two distinct but related squares: one a collage of magazine cutouts, the other a painted interpretation of the same composition. The collage arranges varied blue toned snippets into a scale like pattern reminiscent of fish skin, while the painting meticulously replicates the collage’s color gradients and shapes by hand. Created as an exercise in color matching and translation between mediums, the piece explores the relationship between found imagery and painterly reproduction.

DESIGN OBJECTIVES:
Study color accuracy - Challenge the artist to closely match the subtle variations in hue, saturation, and value found in printed materials through paint.

Explore texture and pattern - Use the fish scale motif to unify the composition and suggest organic repetition.

Contrast mediums - Highlight the differences and similarities in color perception between collage and painting.

Practice observation and translation - Train the eye and hand to interpret and recreate complex color groupings.

VISUAL DESCRIPTION:
The first square is a carefully arranged collage of magazine clippings in various shades of blue, from deep navy to soft sky tones. The rectangular pieces overlap and align to mimic the repetitive, curved pattern of fish scales, creating a shimmering, textured effect. The adjacent square is a painting that recreates the collage’s pattern with acrylic or watercolor, using brushstrokes to emulate the edges and shapes of the cut paper. The painted colors are carefully mixed to replicate the collage’s tonal shifts and visual rhythm, providing a softer, blended counterpart to the collage’s sharp edges.

OUTCOME:
Scaled in Blue serves as both a study and celebration of color and form, demonstrating how different techniques can capture the same visual idea. It encourages viewers to consider the nuances of color perception, the translation between mediums, and the beauty found in everyday materials reimagined as art.
